Octopus Energy Customers Unlock Free Electricity, Fueling charitable Donations
London, UK – September 26, 2025 – Octopus Energy is rewarding customers with free electricity sessions, turning energy usage into a force for good. The initiative, designed to balance grid demand, has already resulted in over £500,000 in charitable donations and the creation of over 200,000 plushies for children in need.
The program incentivizes participation in “free” electricity periods - times when renewable energy supply exceeds demand - by allowing Octoplus members to run appliances without incurring electricity charges. As customers utilize this benefit, Octopus Energy contributes to a growing fund supporting three charities: Dogs on the Streets, FoodCycle, and YoungMinds. To date, the program has enabled support for keeping people experiencing homelessness and their pets together via Dogs on the Streets, transforming surplus food into community meals through FoodCycle, and providing mental health resources for young people with YoungMinds.
Octopus energy’s free electricity sessions are available to customers with a smart meter and a Direct Debit payment plan enrolled in the Octoplus loyalty program. The more electricity used during these designated periods, the greater the potential for charitable contributions. A recent post on X (formerly Twitter) from user @BrianRumbelow highlighted the benefit, stating he used the free electricity to roast potatoes and chickens.
Customers interested in joining Octoplus and participating in the program can find more information and sign up through the Octopus Energy website. The initiative aims to not only reward customers but also to promote responsible energy consumption and support vital community services.
