France to Mandate Environmental Labeling for Clothing Starting October 1
Paris – beginning October 1, France will require clothing brands-from major retailers to independent eco-conscious designers-to display environmental impact scores on their products, a landmark initiative aimed at increasing openness and promoting sustainable fashion choices. The new regulation, spearheaded by the Ministries of Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, ecological Transition, Industry and Energy, and Trade, Crafts, Small and Medium Enterprises and the Social and Solidarity Economy, marks a significant step toward holding the fashion industry accountable for its environmental footprint.
The rollout of this comprehensive labeling system, developed with extensive environmental data analysis, is expected to influence consumer behavior and drive demand for more sustainable apparel. Success in France will serve as a crucial pilot program, informing ongoing European efforts to establish a standardized, continent-wide framework for environmental labeling in the textile sector. the initiative responds to growing public concern over the environmental and social costs of fast fashion and aims to empower consumers with the information needed to make informed purchasing decisions.
A dedicated online portal, www.affichage-environnemental.ecobalyse.beta.gouv.fr, has been launched to provide further details on the new regulations.
