France Political Violence: Student Death & Far-Left/Right Clashes

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

A 23-year-old activist, Quentin Deranque, died Saturday following clashes in Lyon between far-right and anti-fascist groups, igniting a political firestorm in France and placing the La France Insoumise (LFI) party and its leader, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, under intense scrutiny.

Deranque was involved in a fight outside a university conference hall where Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament for LFI, was speaking. According to reports, the clashes erupted as members of the identitarian group Némésis protested Hassan’s appearance. Némésis stated that Deranque was present to provide security for their demonstration.

French Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin stated Sunday that the “ultra-left” was responsible for Deranque’s death, pointing to a perceived “complaisance” from LFI towards political violence. “It was clearly the ultraleft that killed,” Darmanin told RTL radio. These accusations have been amplified by figures on the right, including far-right MEP Marion Maréchal, who alleged that “Mélenchon’s and LFI’s militia killed” Deranque.

Authorities are investigating the role of the Young Guard (Jeune Garde), a local anti-fascist group with ties to LFI. The Ministry of the Interior ordered the group’s dissolution in June 2024, alleging it “incites violent acts” in support of an anti-fascist ideology. The Young Guard, co-founded in 2018 by Raphaël Arnault, a current LFI MP, is challenging the dissolution order in court, with support from LFI and civil liberties organizations.

Jacques-Elie Favrot, an aide to Arnault, has denied involvement in the killing but announced he would step back from his political role pending the investigation. National Assembly President Yaël Braun-Pivet has suspended Favrot’s access to parliament during the inquiry.

Mélenchon held a campaign rally Sunday in Montpellier, where he faced questions about the incident. The death of Deranque has prompted calls from center-left presidential hopeful Raphaël Glucksmann for the left to reconsider any potential alliance with LFI in the 2027 presidential election, deeming it “unthinkable” to entertain any doubt about LFI’s possible role. Government spokesperson Maud Bregeon condemned LFI, accusing the party of fostering “a climate of violence” on BFM-TV.

The incident occurs as France prepares for municipal elections next month. The investigation into Deranque’s death is ongoing, and the political fallout continues to unfold.
