France Launches 2026-2027 Flu and Covid-19 Vaccination Campaign

France Launches 2026-2027 Flu and Covid-19 Vaccination Campaign

October 16, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

France launched its national influenza vaccination campaign on October 13, targeting high-risk populations to prevent severe respiratory complications and hospitalizations. In the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region alone, health authorities are urging approximately 805,000 eligible individuals to receive the vaccine, France 3 Régions reported.

Key Clinical Takeaways:

  • Priority groups include adults 65+, pregnant women, the immunocompromised, and healthcare workers.
  • Co-administration of influenza and Covid-19 vaccines in a single visit is now permitted for eligible patients.
  • Full immunity typically requires 15 days post-injection, preceding the seasonal peak from mid-November to mid-February.

The timing of the rollout is a calculated response to viral pathogenesis and environmental factors. Laurianne Bruet, a project manager at the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté Regional Health Agency (ARS BFC), stated that vaccination must occur before case numbers surge, as the virus thrives in colder weather when people spend more time in poorly ventilated indoor spaces. The primary clinical objective is the reduction of morbidity, specifically preventing high fevers and respiratory failure.

Recent epidemiological data highlight the urgency. Sciencepost noted that respiratory pathologies were already rising by late September, with a 22% weekly increase in emergency room visits for suspected Covid-19. This early circulation suggests that the virus is not waiting for the official campaign start to impact the population.

Co-administration of Influenza and Covid-19 Vaccines

To address persistent gaps in vaccine coverage, the 2026-2027 campaign has simplified the patient pathway. Sciencepost reports that eligible individuals, including those over 65 and high-risk groups, can now receive both the flu and Covid-19 vaccines during a single appointment, administered as one injection in each arm. This shift aims to reduce the number of missed appointments that have historically hindered collective protection.

The need for this simplification is reflected in previous seasonal data. According to VIDAL, influenza vaccine coverage among seniors was approximately 55% during the 2025-2026 winter, while Covid-19 vaccination for targeted groups fell below 20%. These figures remain significantly lower than the 75% coverage target established by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Flu Epidemic Causes Thousands of Hospitalizations in France

The clinical stakes for vulnerable populations are high. In the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region, nearly 20,000 people visited emergency departments due to influenza last year, with 20% of those cases resulting in hospitalization, according to ARS BFC. La Tribune reports that the 2024-2025 flu epidemic in France caused nearly 29,000 hospitalizations and approximately 4,900 deaths, with hospital costs estimated at over 145 million euros annually.

Beyond acute symptoms, VIDAL highlights that respiratory infections can trigger chronic inflammation and weaken the immune system. In older adults, these infections are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, cognitive decline, and a permanent loss of autonomy following hospitalization.

As Professor Paul Loubet, head of infectious diseases at the Nîmes University Hospital, insists as cited by La Tribune, “Chaque passage à 65 ans devrait devenir un rendez-vous systématique de vérification du statut vaccinal”.

Pharmacists and Nurses Provide Vaccinations to High-Risk Groups

The campaign utilizes a broad network of providers to maximize reach. Vaccinations can be administered by pharmacists, nurses, and midwives. For those over 11 years old, a prescription is not required. The ARS BFC confirms that targeted high-risk individuals receive documentation allowing them to be vaccinated free of charge at pharmacies.

The ARS Normandie adds that the vaccine is also offered to children aged 2 to 17 without chronic illnesses, also at a 65% reimbursement rate.

For patients with complex chronic conditions or those managing multiple comorbidities, coordinating these vaccinations with a primary care physician or a specialist in internal medicine is essential to ensure the timing aligns with other treatments.

Integrated Respiratory Prevention Strategy

The influenza campaign is part of a broader winter respiratory shield. The ARS Normandie notes that the 2026-2027 campaign for Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) bronchiolitis in infants began on September 14. This includes the administration of the Abrysvo vaccine to pregnant women between the 32nd and 36th weeks of pregnancy to transfer protective antibodies to the newborn.

Health agencies continue to emphasize “barrier gestures” to supplement immunization. The ARS BFC identifies three critical actions: frequent hand washing, regular ventilation of living and workspaces, and the use of masks when clinically justified.

The current vaccination window remains open until January 31, 2027. As the healthcare system prepares for the peak contamination period, the focus remains on transforming vaccination from an isolated event into a routine component of preventive geriatric and chronic care.
