France Killing: Far-Left Blamed for Death of Right-Wing Supporter in Lyon | 2026 Elections

February 15, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

A 23-year-old French man died Saturday from injuries sustained during an assault in Lyon, an incident that has ignited political tensions across France and prompted accusations from the Justice Minister that the “ultra-left” was responsible. Quentin Deranque, a nationalist volunteer, had been hospitalized in a coma since Thursday after being attacked during a protest against a conference featuring Rima Hassan, a member of the European Parliament from the France Unbowed (LFI) party.

Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin publicly blamed the “ultra-left” for Deranque’s death, speaking on RTL television Sunday. He also criticized LFI leader Jean-Luc Melenchon and Hassan for what he described as a lack of condemnation of political violence. “There are indeed speeches, particularly from France Unbowed and the ultra-left, which unfortunately lead to unbridled violence on social networks and then in the physical world,” Darmanin stated. He added, “Words can kill.”

The Lyon prosecutor’s office confirmed Deranque’s death Saturday, and stated Sunday that an investigation into suspected aggravated manslaughter is underway, according to AFP. Investigators are working to identify the perpetrators.

According to witnesses, the attack involved a dozen individuals assaulting three people on the ground, with some of the assailants wielding iron bars. Adem, a witness who wished to be identified only by his first name, told AFP, “I heard shouts, people were hitting each other with iron bars and so forth. When I came to the scene, I saw individuals covered in blood.”

Supporters of Deranque say he was providing security at the protest against Hassan’s appearance when he was attacked by rival activists. The Nemesis collective, a far-right group, claimed Deranque was assaulted by “anti-fascist” activists. The family’s lawyer stated that Deranque appeared to have been ambushed by a larger, organized group, some of whom were masked and armed.

Melenchon responded to the accusations Sunday, expressing “shock” at Deranque’s death and offering condolences to his family. He maintained that his movement opposes violence and rejected the blame placed on LFI as having “any connection with reality.”

Raphael Arnault, founder of La Jeune Garde, an anti-fascist youth group affiliated with LFI, expressed “horror” at the fatal beating and announced the group had suspended its activities. Eric Coquerel, an LFI lawmaker, condemned all political violence but suggested the activists responsible for Hassan’s security were not involved, pointing to violence from “far-right groups” in the area.

The incident has drawn condemnation from across the political spectrum. Marine Le Pen, a three-time presidential candidate, called for the “barbarians responsible for this lynching” to be brought to justice on X. Demonstrations in memory of Deranque took place in Montpellier and Paris, with protesters displaying a banner reading “antifa murderers, justice for Quentin.”

President Emmanuel Macron has called for “calm” and “restraint” in the wake of the incident. At Saint George’s Church in Lyon, where Deranque volunteered for charities, priest Laurent Spriet called for prayers “for the peace of Quentin’s soul,” urging compassion and respect whereas allowing the police and justice system to conduct their investigation.

Calls to classify antifascist groups as terrorist organizations have emerged in Europe following the incident. German MP Alice Weidel and Marine Le Pen have urged such a classification, and a symbolic motion was introduced in the EU Parliament on extremist groups, with Hungary following the U.S. In labeling Antifa as terrorists, according to reports.
