Four UK Family Dies in Portugal Car Crash | Latest News

UK Family of Five Killed in Portugal Car Crash

A tragic car accident in castro Verde, Portugal, has claimed the lives of five individuals, including four members of a UK-based family. The incident occurred while the family was on holiday, leaving communities in both Portugal and the United Kingdom in mourning.

The victims have been identified as Domingos Serrano, 55, his wife Maria Serrano, 51, and their twin sons, Domingos and Afonso Serrano, both aged 20. Also killed was the 19-year-old girlfriend of one of the sons, whose name has not yet been released. The driver of the othre vehicle involved, a 26-year-old Portuguese national, also died at the scene.

The Serrano family resided in Thetford,Norfolk,England,though they were not British citizens. They were travelling from Faro in the Algarve region to Mourao, a town in the Alentejo region of Portugal, for their annual vacation, according to a statement released by the Mourao municipal Council.

The crash took place on the N2 road near Castro Verde, a rural area in the Alentejo region. Emergency services were called to the scene at approximately 14:30 local time on Saturday, February 17, 2024. The cause of the collision is currently under examination by Portuguese authorities.

Mourao authorities have declared two days of official mourning in response to the tragedy. “Residents in England, travelling from Faro to Mourão, for the usual and deserved vacation,” the municipal council stated. “It is with great regret that the municipality announces this information, offering its condolences to the families and friends of the victims.”

Thetford Town youth Football Club, where Afonso and Domingos Serrano Jr.played, expressed their deep sorrow in a Facebook post. The club described the twins as “integral” members of their Under-18s team and acknowledged the “massive void” their loss will leave in the local community. Club Chairman, Peter Davies, stated, “the entire club is devastated by this news. the Serrano family were well-known and loved within our community, and the boys were promising young footballers.”
