Foundayo Weight Loss Pill Launches in UK Amid Counterfeit Warnings

August 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

A new daily pill that treats type 2 diabetes and aids in weight reduction launches in UK pharmacies on Monday, offering an oral alternative for patients who cannot use injectable weight-loss treatments. Manufactured by the US pharmaceutical firm Eli Lilly and known commercially as Foundayo, the medication contains the active ingredient orforglipron and was authorised by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) earlier this month.

  • Foundayo (orforglipron) launches in UK pharmacies on Monday, as an oral once-daily tablet for type 2 diabetes and weight management.
  • The UK is the first country in Europe to approve the drug, which is initially available via private prescription.
  • Health authorities and pharmacy leaders warn patients to avoid counterfeit GLP-1 products by securing treatments exclusively through regulated channels.

Regulatory Status and Launch Details in the United Kingdom

The MHRA authorisation makes the UK the first country in Europe to approve orforglipron, following the regulatory clearance of another weight-loss pill in June. Khalil Asmar, vice-president of cardiometabolic health at Lilly Northern Europe, stated that the UK is the first country in Europe where Foundayo is now available, providing another oral treatment option alongside licensed injectable therapies for eligible patients.

At launch, the drug is available exclusively through private prescription. Eli Lilly confirmed it is engaging with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) regarding the assessment of Foundayo for a potential rollout within the National Health Service (NHS) in England.

Clinical Indications and Pharmacological Administration

The therapy is licensed specifically for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI between 27 and 30 who present with at least one weight-related condition. Additionally, it is indicated to improve blood sugar levels in patients managing poorly controlled type 2 diabetes.

Orforglipron is a pill taken once daily at any time.

Public Health Warnings Regarding Counterfeit GLP-1 Products

Alongside the commercial launch, professional pharmacy bodies have raised alarms regarding the proliferation of illicit, unlicensed, or counterfeit versions of GLP-1 medications.

The MHRA previously seized £250,000 worth of unlicensed weight-loss pens and ingredients from a facility in Northampton, while Eli Lilly continues legal action against suppliers accused of participating in unauthorized hidden markets. Henry Gregg, chief executive of the National Pharmacy Association, noted that while the new oral option is significant for patients who cannot or do not want injectable medications, patients must access treatments solely through safe and regulated pharmacies.

Gregg also emphasized the need for government and NHS stakeholders to expand pharmacy-led access to ensure eligible patients can obtain clinically indicated weight management services without relying on inconsistent regional availability.

Future Trajectory and Patient Triage

As NICE continues its health technology appraisal, equitable clinical access remains a central focus for public health authorities.
