Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, has cut over 1,000 jobs, citing financial difficulties as the battle royale game experiences a slump in performance. The layoffs, representing approximately 2% of the company’s workforce, were announced Tuesday, March 24, 2026, according to multiple reports.
The cuts come as Epic acknowledged it is “spending significantly more than we’re making,” signaling a challenging period for the company despite the continued popularity of Fortnite. While the exact financial figures were not disclosed, the move suggests a need to reassess spending and prioritize profitability.
Fortnite, initially released in 2017, has evolved from a single battle royale game into a platform hosting a variety of experiences. These include the original “Save the World” cooperative campaign, racing modes like Rocket Racing, and creative spaces where players can design and share their own games. The company is preparing to make “Save the World,” the game mode that predates the battle royale phenomenon, free-to-play on April 16, nearly a decade after its initial release. This move will also see the mode grow available on Nintendo Switch 2.
Currently, Fortnite offers several distinct game modes. Battle Royale remains the flagship experience, pitting 100 players against each other in a shrinking map. “Reload” offers a faster-paced, smaller-scale battle royale with respawns. “OG” mode recreates the experience of Fortnite’s first chapter, appealing to long-time players. Blitz provides quick, intense matches with a reduced player count and disabled building. Ballistic is a team-based, first-person shooter mode, available until April 16. Fortnite Festival allows players to perform music using a variety of instruments. LEGO Odyssey and LEGO Brick Life offer cooperative and life-simulation experiences within the Fortnite universe. Creative mode allows players to build and share their own islands and games, while Party Royale provides a relaxed, non-combat environment.
Despite the diverse range of offerings, the core battle royale mode remains central to Fortnite’s identity. Players can choose to engage in traditional building-focused gameplay or opt for “Zero Build” modes, which remove the building mechanic entirely. The company encourages players to explore different modes and capture advantage of daily challenges to maximize their experience and earn rewards.
