Charleston, W.Va. – Construction to repair the deck of the Fort hill Bridge in Charleston will begin Monday evening, October 13th, according to the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT). triton Construction, which was awarded a $6.67 million contract last week, will undertake the project.
The WVDOT fast-tracked the repairs on the bridge, a section of Interstate 64, to address deterioration and extend its lifespan. Work will initially focus on full-depth concrete patching, followed by the request of an impermeable membrane to prevent water damage. A two-inch asphalt overlay will then be applied to create a smoother driving surface and provide additional protection to the concrete deck.
Construction is scheduled to take place weekdays from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. and continuously throughout weekends. WVDOT anticipates the project will be completed by the end of November.
According to WVDOH bridge engineers, these repairs are intended as an interim solution, extending the deck’s usability until a complete redecking project can be awarded within the next year.
