Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Faces Ethics Charges Over Alleged Misuse of Funds
SPARTANBURG COUNTY, S.C. – Former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright is facing 60 state ethics charges, alongside federal charges, stemming from allegations he misused a county-issued credit card for personal expenses totaling over $17,000, according to recently released documents from the South Carolina State Ethics commission.
A 19-page report details numerous purchases made with the card at over 100 different businesses. The documents allege Wright used taxpayer money to purchase 92 packs of cigarettes at Dollar General. He is also accused of spending more than $1,300 on games through the Apple App Store,including titles like Huntwise,ramp Car Jumping,and Royal Match.
Further alleged personal spending includes subscriptions to Sirius XM, over $5,000 on food – with meaningful amounts spent at fuddruckers ($900), chick-fil-A ($345), and Super King Buffet ($281) – and $946 at Best Buy, where an iPad was purchased. The report also indicates Wright incurred $210 in penalties for exceeding his credit card limit and spent $71 at CVS on an at-home drug test kit.
Wright is scheduled to appear at a hearing in February to address the charges. His attorney has not yet responded to requests for comment from Fox Carolina.
