Former Pro Cyclist Damien Girard Dies at 24
Former professional cyclist Damien Girard has died at the age of 24. Announced late Monday evening by the club Team Estérel Côte d’Azur and confirmed to DirectVelo by multiple sources, the sudden passing of the young French rider marks a somber moment for the cycling community as the late-season calendar continues.
Early Career and Rise Through the French Amateur Ranks
Born in Tours, Damien Girard first established himself in the sport during the 2018 Junior ranks while riding for Team Peltrax-CS Dammarie-lès-Lys, following his initial steps into cycling with UC Vendôme. His early promise translated into notable victories, including winning the opening stage of La Cantonale in the Fédérale Juniors category. The following season, he secured a prestigious win in the Coupe de France at the summit of the Vallée Verte in Jugon-les-Lacs. Advancing to the Espoirs category, Girard spent three seasons with CC Nogent-sur-Oise, highlighted by his victory at the 2022 Tour Nivernais Morvan.
Transition to the Professional Peloton
That amateur success earned him a professional contract with the Nice Continental team for the 2023 season. Speaking to DirectVelo shortly before his professional debut, Girard reflected on achieving his career ambition. “It’s a dream come true. It’s going to feel weird for me. I’ll have my little thrill at the start,” he stated at the time. During his three seasons competing at the professional level, he secured a stage win at the Tour du Maroc in Classe 2. He also made his mark in early-season French races, capturing the mountains classification title at the Tour de la Provence (2.1), finishing 10th at the Grand Prix de Marseille-La Marseillaise (1.1), and taking 17th at the Etoile de Bessèges. Reflecting on his performance at La Marseillaise, Girard noted his winter preparation, stating, “It’s great, it proves that I progressed really well over the winter. I surprised myself a bit.”
Retirement from Elite Competition
Entering the 2025 campaign for what would become his final professional season, Girard expressed ambitions to reach a higher competitive level. However, after not being retained by Team Nice Métropole Côte d’Azur, he stepped away from high-level competition this past winter. DirectVelo extended its sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Damien Girard.
