Former PANTERA Singer TERRY GLAZE: How I Found Out About DIMEBAG’s Death

Former PANTERA Singer Reflects on Band’s Past and Future

In a recent interview, former PANTERA vocalist Terrence Lee “Terry” Glaze shared his memories of the band’s early days, his departure, and his thoughts on their current resurgence. This offers a unique perspective on the band’s history, just as the music world continues to debate the legacy of the iconic metal group.

Glaze’s Reflections

During a chat with Anthony Bryant from The Hair Metal Guru, Glaze discussed leaving PANTERA before Philip Anselmo took over. He sang on the first three PANTERA albums during their “party metal” phase. Afterwards, Glaze formed the band LORD TRACY.

When questioned about the reasons for his departure, Glaze stated, “I’m not exactly sure that I remember. It was just life, just things. And you might have a disagreement on how to proceed in certain ways. But it was just basically that.”

“I think we were playing in Wichita Falls maybe. And it was so weird. It was just weird. We were playing, and it was a great show. And then just ‘bye’.”

Regarding the musical evolution of PANTERA, Glaze added that it was not a factor in his decision to leave. When asked about his thoughts on PANTERA‘s heavier direction with the 1990 album “Cowboys From Hell,” Glaze acknowledged that he was unaware of their new sound at the time, as he was focused on LORD TRACY.

Glaze shared a vivid memory of “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott playing tracks from the upcoming PANTERA record. Darrell played him “Mouth For War” and asked, VAN HALEN, right?

He also expressed his happiness for his former bandmates’ ongoing success. Glaze believes there is space for all art forms, and he is grateful to be doing what he loves. Regarding Dimebag’s 2004 death, Glaze recalled the shock and disbelief he experienced upon hearing the news.

Early Days and Future Prospects

Glaze went on to state how he was happy to see PANTERA‘s return to the stage. He added the comeback is a good way to honor the Texan metallers’ music. While talking with Eonmusic, Glaze discussed the band’s beginnings.

Glaze mentioned that he and his bandmates wanted to play with the best drummer. The group reluctantly agreed to include Darrell, Vinnie Abbott‘s younger brother, who was in middle school at the time. He expressed interest in seeing the early albums, like “Metal Magic,” reissued.

When asked for his thoughts on PANTERA‘s current comeback tour, he expressed a sentiment similar to how he views VAN HALEN. He said, “But you know, man, more power to everybody to get to celebrate the music and get together and have fellowship.” He also acknowledges the young fans who can now celebrate the music live.

The current PANTERA reunion tour has sparked interest across generations. With the original records not getting reissued, it’s still a way to keep the music alive. Concert ticket sales are up, as reported by Statista in 2023.
