Former NBA All-Star D’Angelo Russell Signs with Shanghai Sharks
Former NBA All-Star guard D’Angelo Russell signed a contract with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association, as announced by the CBA on Wednesday. The 30-year-old veteran transitions overseas following an 11-season NBA career spanning six franchises, most recently featuring stints with the Dallas Mavericks, Washington Wizards, and Memphis Grizzlies.
From the NBA Draft to the Chinese Basketball Association
The Los Angeles Lakers originally selected Russell as the No. 2 overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. Over his 11-year career in North America, the 6-foot-3 guard accumulated 655 career regular-season games, including 539 starts. Across those appearances, he holds career averages of 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game. His most productive individual campaign came during the 2018-19 season with the Brooklyn Nets, where he earned an All-Star nod after posting averages of 21.1 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per contest.
Beyond his tenure in Los Angeles and Brooklyn, Russell also suited up for the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves. The Dallas Mavericks traded Russell to the Washington Wizards on Feb. 5 as part of a three-team trade. He never made an appearance for Washington before the franchise flipped him to the Memphis Grizzlies on July 8 in a six-team transaction. The Grizzlies subsequently waived him.

During his final stretch in the NBA with the Dallas Mavericks last season, Russell logged 26 appearances with three starts. In those limited minutes, he averaged 10.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game.
