Former Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson Found to Have Made False Claims About Cancer, Military Service, and Education
TOWNSVILLE, QLD – A report from the Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has found former Townsville mayor Troy Thompson repeatedly misled voters about a cancer diagnosis, his military history, and his academic qualifications. The findings, released publicly, detail a pattern of deception during his time as mayor and in his election campaigns.
The CCC investigation revealed Thompson falsely claimed to have battled cancer multiple times, served in the military, “put himself through university” with a business degree, and held bachelor’s degrees in commerce and science. These misrepresentations occurred in election materials and public statements, raising serious questions about his integrity and conduct as a public official. The revelations contributed to mounting pressure that led to Thompson’s resignation in September after 18 months in office.
The report states Thompson was enrolled in a bachelor of commerce degree for one semester in 2006, passing only two of four subjects. He has no university qualifications. He was subsequently defeated in a November byelection, following accusations he resigned to avoid dismissal by the minister and then called for the dismissal of the entire council.
The CCC has referred allegations of false claims made during the election period and leaking as mayor to the Queensland department of public prosecutions. The commission also recommended the introduction of a system requiring candidates to declare qualifications and employment history, with penalties for providing false data. This case highlights the need for greater openness and accountability in local government elections in Queensland.
