Former American Idol Contestant and Pastor Jailed for Life for Wife’s Murder
A 40-year-old former music pastor and one-time American Idol contestant named Caleb Flynn was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole at the Miami County Court of Common Pleas in Troy, Ohio, after a jury convicted him of murdering his 37-year-old wife, Ashley Flynn. He was sentenced on Monday after a jury convicted him on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.
Life Sentence Imposed After Jury Convicts Former Pastor
Judge Jeannine Pratt ordered the life sentence following a trial that detailed the February shooting in Tipp City, a suburb north of Dayton. Prosecutors presented evidence that Caleb Flynn shot his wife in their home while their two daughters were sleeping down the hall, then staged the scene to look like a break-in, claiming she was killed by a burglar after he heard gunshots and found the garage door open.
During the sentencing hearing, Flynn read a statement expressing remorse to his family and admitting that his marriage vows were broken, stating, I made vows to Ashley on our wedding day. I failed in those vows,
and sobbing loudly while letters from his children were read. He maintained his innocence regarding the fatal shooting, telling the court, As I stand here before God, who is my ultimate judge, I am not lying when I say I did not kill my wife,
and adding, I will continue to fight for my innocence as long as the Lord allows me to.
Ashley’s father stated in court that the family had chosen to forgive Flynn, but still urged the judge to hand down the maximum sentence.
Affair and Text Messages Revealed During Trial
The prosecution’s case relied heavily on digital evidence and testimony regarding an extramarital affair. Alleigha Botner testified that she met Flynn in 2022 during her internship at his church when she was 20 years old, initiating a relationship that lasted over a year. Prosecutors entered thousands of text messages into evidence—totaling about 100,000 communications—including exchanges where Flynn wrote, I was up until 4am last night crying, literally thinking of ways to kill her and not go to jail,
and I just want her dead and gone.
Botner also read a message where she stated, I want to kill her, Caleb,
to which Flynn replied, That makes two of us.
Flynn also sent a message to his lover the night before the shooting saying, I choose you. I’m free. Actions will come tomorrow.
The trial also featured testimony regarding AI-generated love songs that Flynn allegedly created for his mistress.

Victim Impact Statements from Daughters
The courtroom proceedings included emotional statements from the victims’ family members. One daughter’s letter began Dear Daddy, I don’t even know where to start. How could you do such a thing?
and called her mother the perfect person
before stating, And then you chose to kill the only mother I ever had.
The other daughter’s letter began Dear Caleb,
asked him to tell everyone what you did it and receive your outcome,
and added, You had the best life ever, and you decided to throw it away for a girl who was half your age,
with the child stating she would never visit him in prison.
Defense counsel Mulligan stated an intention to file a notice of appeal, challenging the conviction on the grounds of a lack of evidence regarding prior calculation and design.
