Foreign Listeners Generate 60% of Spotify Royalties for Indonesians
Indonesian Music Streams Drive Foreign Royalty Surge on Spotify
Foreign listeners generated 60 percent of royalty revenues for Indonesian musicians on Spotify in 2025, driven by more than 6.3 billion discoveries of local works, Culture Fadli Zon announced on October 27, at the Indonesian Music Conference in Makassar, South Sulawesi, voi.id reported.
The Tech TL;DR:
- Streaming discovery metrics for Indonesian music on Spotify surpassed 6.3 billion plays across 2025.
- Total royalty earnings increased by more than 16 percent year-over-year, according to Ministry of Culture figures released at the Makassar conference.
- International audiences in the United States, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, and Great Britain account for the majority of the streaming revenue share.
Global Streaming Reach Outpaces Domestic Growth
The streaming data presented at Hotel Claro highlights a growing international appetite for contemporary and traditional Indonesian sounds. Listeners outside Indonesia account for six out of every ten generated in royalties through the platform. Major consumer markets leading this cross-border consumption include the United States, Germany, Japan, Malaysia, and Great Britain.
Alongside international adoption, domestic demand for local releases also climbed during 2025. Total royalty yields grew by over 16 percent compared to the previous annual cycle. Ministry officials attribute this growth to listeners discovering domestic tracks through digital streaming infrastructure.
Ministry of Culture Seeks Structural Improvements for Music Ecosystem
Opening the 2026 conference under the theme Acting together to implement a sovereign Indonesian music ecosystem,
Fadli emphasized that cultural growth requires structural improvements. Governance, educational frameworks, talent development, production pipelines, distribution channels, and intellectual property protections must evolve alongside streaming metrics.
The Ministry of Culture intends to translate conference recommendations into active government policy rather than leaving them as advisory reports. This implementation phase relies on cross-sector collaboration connecting independent creators, educational institutions, industry stakeholders, and state entities.
Vice Minister of Culture Giring Ganesha Djumaryo added that Prabowo Subianto directed the administration to act as a facilitator. This administrative support targets infrastructure modernization, regulatory refinement, and structured dialogue for industry participants. Officials noted that blending traditional Indonesian musical forms with contemporary production styles continues to generate distinct creative works that appeal to global audiences.
