Eryk Goczal of the Energylandia team delivered a stunning upset in Stage 9 of the Dakar Rally, securing his first stage win while simultaneously propelling Nani roma to the overall lead. The 410km stretch from Wadi ad-Dawasir to Bisha proved to be a pivotal moment in the race, marked by meaningful navigational challenges that reshuffled the leaderboard and dashed the hopes of several key contenders.
A Stage of Dramatic Shifts
The day began with Lucas Moraes, the reigning World Rally-raid champion, setting a strong pace in his Dacia Sandrider, establishing a 1m30s lead over Toyota’s Guy Botterill by the 271km mark. However, misfortune struck both drivers shortly after, effectively removing them from contention and unexpectedly elevating the 21-year-old Goczal to the front of the pack. Benefitting from a deeper starting position, Goczal enjoyed clearer tracks, allowing him to maintain a consistent pace and ultimately claim victory in the Ultimate class with a comfortable seven-minute margin.
The Goczal family celebrated a remarkable 1-2 finish, with Michal goczal securing second place, showcasing the Energylandia team’s prowess and outperforming the established factory teams. Two-time bikes champion Toby Price, driving a Toyota, managed to secure third place, albeit 11 minutes behind Goczal, marking the best result for a manufacturer-backed entrant on this challenging stage.
Guillaume de Mevius finished fourth in his X-Raid Mini, while Cristina Gutierrez emerged as the leading Dacia driver, capitalizing on the setbacks experienced by her teammates to claim fifth position.
Navigational woes and Shifting Fortunes
the stage wasn’t without its casualties. Carlos Sainz Sr., a Ford star driver, faced a 15-minute penalty due to speeding, but still managed a respectable sixth-place finish. However, the day proved particularly disastrous for Toyota, with Seth Quintero, Guy Botterill, and Henk Lategan all losing significant time – exceeding 20 minutes – and slipping down the rankings. lategan’s performance was hampered by power steering issues, exacerbating the difficulties posed by the complex navigation.
Nasser Al-Attiyah, the overnight leader, experienced a particularly frustrating day, getting lost approximately 280km into the stage. Despite eventually reaching the finish line, he conceded a substantial 26 minutes to Goczal, dropping him to third place overall. The Ford duo of Mattias Ekstrom and Mitch Guthrie suffered even more significant setbacks, losing over 30 and 60 minutes respectively, effectively ending their chances of overall victory.
Roma Takes the Lead
The dramatic events of Stage 9 have dramatically reshaped the overall standings. Nani Roma now leads the rally, holding a narrow 57-second advantage over his Ford teammate, Carlos Sainz. The overturning of Sainz’s 1m10s speeding penalty proved crucial in establishing this lead. Al-Attiyah remains within striking distance in third, just 1m10s behind Roma, while Lategan trails by a further five minutes in fourth.
Ekstrom has fallen to fifth place, while WRC legend Sebastien Loeb maintains a solid sixth position despite losing half an hour on Tuesday. Price holds seventh, followed by the earlier stage leader, Lucas Moraes, whose performance was hampered by a 15-minute penalty. Matthieu Serradori and cristina Gutierrez round out the provisional top 10.
