Lionel Messi‘s newly acquired villa on the Spanish island of ibiza is facing potential demolition after authorities discovered unauthorized construction carried out by the previous owner. the issue centers on structures built without the necessary building permits,a complication Messi was reportedly unaware of until after completing the purchase on February 3,2022.
The dispute places the football icon in a challenging position, requiring the removal of illegally constructed areas to secure the property’s legality. While Messi’s legal team has engaged with Spanish authorities seeking a resolution, the Sant Josep town hall has stated that official certification can only be granted upon demolition of the unapproved additions. The situation highlights the complexities of property acquisition and the potential for inherited legal issues, even for high-profile buyers.
According to reports, the unauthorized construction predates Messi’s ownership. He learned of the issue through his notary in Barcelona following the completion of the sale. Despite being represented by legal counsel during the purchase, the building irregularities were not initially identified.
Messi’s representatives have been actively working to resolve the problem, attempting to navigate the legal requirements for a fully compliant transfer of ownership. Though, the town hall has stipulated that the removal of structures not included in the original project plans is a prerequisite for approval.
The affected areas primarily involve the garage, meaning Messi is currently permitted to reside in the 16,000-square-meter estate, which includes a 568-square-meter villa and a 92-meter infinity pool. The resolution hinges on addressing the unpermitted construction to fully legitimize the property.
