Foods to Avoid After Wisdom Tooth Removal
To help ensure a full recovery, consider this list of foods to avoid after wisdom tooth removal.
Spicy Foods
If you enjoy spicy food, you’ll need to skip it during recovery. Spicy foods can irritate the extraction site, according to the University of washington School of Dentistry (UWSD).
Avoid these spicy foods for the first three days of recovery:
- Hot sauce
- Spicy peppers like chilies or jalapenos
- Spicy curries
Acidic Foods and Drinks
Avoid highly acidic foods and drinks in the first few days following surgery, as they can aggravate discomfort, according to the UWSD.
Acidic foods to avoid include:
- Citrus fruits like lemon, lime, and grapefruit
- Tomatoes
- Vinegar
- Soda and other carbonated drinks
- Coffee
seeds and Nuts
Seeds and nuts are not ideal after wisdom tooth removal. These hard, crunchy snacks can aggravate gums and hinder healing, according to the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS).
This includes smaller varieties like chia seeds and breads containing seeds or nuts. Small food particles can lodge in the socket and irritate the surgical site, according to Cleveland clinic.
Food debris can contribute to dry socket, a painful complication where the protective blood clot dislodges, exposing bone and nerves and increasing the risk of infection or delayed healing, according to Mayo Clinic.
