Flowing Journey Film Explores Grief and Connection Through a Shared Piano
The feature film The Flowing Journey arrives in South Korean theaters on October 28, bringing together veteran actress Kim Hye-ok and actor Justin H. Min in a drama directed by Kim Jin-yu. The movie explores grief, displacement, and unexpected human connection through the shared medium of a grand piano left behind by a deceased husband.
Moving into a New Chapter After Loss
During the move, her husband’s grand piano fails to fit through the new home’s window. A German-born neighbor named Min-jun, played by Justin H. Min, intervenes and offers to keep the instrument in his own living room.
This logistical hurdle establishes a daily routine for Choon-hee, who visits Min-jun’s apartment regularly to polish the piano. Min-jun, a skilled conductor who speaks clumsy Korean with casual informality, is in Korea to locate his birth mother after being adopted to Germany in his youth.
The Visual Motif of Cleaning and the Climax Concert
The narrative builds toward a late-stage concert sequence where Min-jun conducts an orchestra alongside Sung-chan. This musical performance serves as the emotional pivot of the film, blending distinct personal histories into a unified orchestral arrangement, as the production received awards including the New Vision Award at the 51st Seoul Independent Film Festival, alongside the Korean Film Directors Guild Plus M Award and the KBS Independent Film Award at the 30th Busan International Film Festival.
Festival Recognition Precedes Commercial Release
The upcoming theatrical release marks director Kim Jin-yu’s return to screens six years after the 2020 feature I am Bori.
