Flotilla activists describe beatings, tasers, mistreatment by Israeli forces – The Hindu
Israeli naval forces intercepted a flotilla of vessels in international waters on Wednesday, detaining the activists on board before deporting them from the country on Thursday. The operation, which aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, has triggered a wave of international condemnation following the release of video footage depicting the treatment of those detained.
The footage, posted by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, shows activists pinned to the ground in what appeared to be a makeshift detention area at the port of Ashdod. The imagery prompted swift rebukes from several Western governments. Britain’s foreign ministry characterized the video as a violation of “the most basic standards of respect and dignity for people,” while Italy demanded an official apology. France called for the immediate release of all detainees, and Spain stated it would not tolerate the maltreatment of its citizens.
The incident also drew criticism within Israel. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed disapproval of the activists’ treatment, and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee remarked that Ben-Gvir had “betrayed (the) dignity of his nation.”
Following their release from detention, several activists alleged they were subjected to physical assault and mistreatment while in custody. The Israeli foreign ministry confirmed that all activists involved in the interception were deported on Thursday.
Among those detained were nine Indonesian nationals. The Indonesian House of Representatives (MPR) has publicly commended the Indonesian government for its efforts in securing their release. The activists are expected to arrive in Jakarta on Sunday. Despite the diplomatic activity surrounding the release of the Indonesian citizens, the Indonesian government has maintained a policy of not engaging in direct communication with Israeli authorities regarding the incident.
The Polish foreign minister has proposed that Itamar Ben-Gvir be barred from entering Poland in response to his role in the handling of the activists. As of Saturday, there has been no indication of a change in the status of the diplomatic relations or the specific policy positions held by the involved nations regarding the interception.
