Florida Republicans Narrowly Hold the Line Amidst National Blue Wave

Florida Republicans Narrowly Hold the Line Amidst National Blue Wave

November 7, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Florida Republicans narrowly defended their traditional strongholds on Election Day, surviving a national blue wave that swept across much of the United States while leaving the state’s conservative political infrastructure on surprisingly unstable ground.

Narrow Margins in a Historic Stronghold

While a nationwide electoral backlash upended Republican majorities in several states, Florida narrowly held the line. Voters elected conservative allies of Donald Trump to the state’s top offices, but by unexpectedly razor-thin margins. Congressman Byron Donalds narrowly defeated his Democratic challenger to become the state’s first Black governor, while Ashley Moody secured a seat in the United States Senate. Both races were decided by margins under 3%.

Securing the governor’s office, Naples Republican congressman Byron Donalds defeated David Jolly by a 1.3% margin. Ashley Moody and state Attorney General James Uthmeier – won their elections. Gathered for Donalds’ watch party inside a ballroom at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Linda Gonzalez explained that her primary backing for the congressman stemmed from the fact that a lot of people want to continue the policies of Gov. Ron DeSantis and Donalds has said he would do that. Pointing out on social media that the GOP suffered gubernatorial defeats in Texas, Ohio, and Georgia, DeSantis highlighted that Florida stands as the sole top-10 most populous American state currently governed by a Republican.

The outcomes left political analysts examining the changing nature of a state that served as a last bastion of the Make America Great Again movement. Just a generation ago, Florida functioned as the ultimate presidential swing state before turning reliably red in recent years.

The Structural Edge of Voter Registration

Outgoing Governor Ron DeSantis pointed to the state’s enduring party registration advantage as the decisive firewall against the national wave. Republicans maintained a cushion of roughly 1.5 million more registered voters than Democrats, a gap built largely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Voter turnout surged on both sides, reaching 68.4% for registered Democrats compared to 62.6% for Republicans. Despite high Democratic participation, the sheer volume of registered Republicans ultimately carried conservative candidates across the finish line. They were able to squeak over the finish line, Jewett said.

State voters also approved Amendment 3, a property tax initiative that drew fiscal conservatives to the polls in significant numbers. Governor DeSantis credited the measure with bringing disaffected voters out to support low-tax policies even as broader pocketbook frustrations drove opposition to the party elsewhere.

Cracks in the Legislative Supermajority

Despite retaining control of the executive offices, Florida Republicans suffered notable setbacks in the state legislature. Democrats captured a net gain of 15 house seats, breaking the Republican supermajority and signaling a shifting balance of power in Tallahassee.

Aubrey Jewett, a political science professor at the University of Central Florida, noted that Governor-elect Donalds will likely not wield the absolute authority that outgoing Governor DeSantis enjoyed during his tenure. A Republican mid-cycle redistricting effort failed to achieve its intended goals, with Democrats successfully defending targeted congressional districts.

Democratic leaders seized on the results as proof of renewed viability in a state often written off by national party strategists. Angie Nixon argued that financial support from national Democrats was too little, too late. Florida voters saw through the blatant power grab, the state party said Wednesday in a post on X. Florida Democrats, he said, had reached a high-water mark.

In this election cycle at least, it was a wash, a failed effort by Republicans, Jewett said.

We invested in grassroots organizers and partnered with candidates down ballot. I’m so proud of the work we did helping to flip 17 House Seats. Many of whom were candidates we partnered with in the primary. Imagine what would have happened if we had more investment early on.

Additional Perspectives on the Vote

Jolly and Nixon were much more competitive than I expected, said Bob Jarvis, a law professor at Nova Southeastern University.

What Lies Ahead for Florida Politics

As the state prepares for a new legislative session and the transition of executive power in January, both parties face changed political conditions.
