Floorball Finals: Kurši & Liepājnieki Battle for Championship Spot
A decisive fifth game will determine the final matchup in Latvia’s Men’s First League floorball playoffs, as FK Kurši and KNSS/Linde Grupa remain locked in a tight semi-final series. Following a 6-5 victory for FK Kurši on March 20th, the series is tied at 2-2, according to reports from Liepajniekiem.lv and Liepaja.lv.
FK Kurši initially dominated the series, winning the first game 9-4 on March 14th, with Edvards Egliens and Gvido Griezītis each scoring three goals, as reported by Latvijas Florbola savienība. However, KNSS/Linde Grupa responded with a 5-3 win on March 15th and again with a 7-6 victory on March 22nd, leveling the competition.
The current series marks a significant moment for FK Kurši, a club with over 20 years of history in Liepāja. Established in 1997, the club encompasses both a sports society, “Florbola klubs “Kurši””, and a specialized sports education institution, “Florbola sporta skola,” according to information on the club’s official website, fkkursi.lv. FK Kurši secured their first championship title in the Latvian Floorball League’s first division during the 2023/2024 season, completing the playoff phase with a perfect record, as detailed on Wikipedia.
The upcoming fifth game, scheduled for March 27th at the LOC manēža in Liepāja, will be crucial for both teams. Currently, FK Kurši holds the top position in the league standings with 45 points after 20 games, closely followed by SK Slampe/Zevid with 40 points, and Masters Ulbroka with 38 points, as per the league table published on fkkursi.lv.
Meanwhile, the club’s youth teams are also competing. The U14X team recently faced Ķekavas Bulldogs on March 18th, losing 0-2. The club is also actively recruiting for the Liepāja 28th Championship in floorball, with registration open until April 20th, as announced on fkkursi.lv.
The winner of the FK Kurši versus KNSS/Linde Grupa series will advance to the league final, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final matchup. The outcome of that series remains pending.
