Fleetwood Mac has firmly denied reports circulating that they will reunite to perform at author J.K. Rowling’s upcoming 60th birthday celebration.A representative for the band told Rolling Stone the story was “categorically false” and “not in the realm of true.”
The potential reunion sparked speculation despite previous statements suggesting it was highly improbable.Christine McVie’s death in 2022 and Lindsey Buckingham’s dismissal from the band in 2018 were widely considered to have ended any possibility of a full-group return.Stevie Nicks stated to Mojo last year, “Without Christine, no can do…There is no chance of putting Fleetwood Mac back together in any way. Without her, it just couldn’t work.”
Nicks also cited concerns about Buckingham’s health following emergency open-heart surgery in 2019, suggesting it would prevent him from undertaking the extensive touring required by Fleetwood Mac, ”even if I thought I could work with Lindsey again.” The band last performed together in November 2019.
The daily Mail had reported Rowling was planning a two-day, James Bond-themed 60th birthday party. Rowling previously hosted Blondie at a party in 2017.
Despite the denial of a full reunion, there are signs of a thawing relationship between Buckingham and his former bandmates. Both Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood contributed to Miley Cyrus’s recently released single, “Secrets.” Buckingham has also been involved in promotional activity for a reissue of Buckingham Nicks, his 1975 duo album with Stevie Nicks, sharing Instagram posts related to the release.
An authorized documentary about Fleetwood mac, directed by Frank Marshall (known for How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, a film about the Bee gees), is currently in production with Apple and will feature new interviews with surviving band members.
Rowling’s latest novel, The Hallmarked Man, was released under her Robert Galbraith pen name.
