Flamengo Sack Coach Filipe Luís After 8-0 Win | Brazilian Serie A

Rio de Janeiro – Flamengo, the reigning South American and Brazilian champions, dismissed head coach Filipe Luís on Tuesday, a mere hours after securing a dominant 8-0 victory over Madureira in the first leg of the Campeonato Carioca semifinal. The unexpected decision came despite the emphatic win, which all but guarantees Flamengo’s place in the final.

The club announced Luís’s departure in a brief statement released in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Assistant coach Ivan Palanco and physical trainer Diogo Linhares were also relieved of their duties. “Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, as of this Tuesday, Filipe Luís will no longer be in charge of the professional team,” the statement read. “Flamengo thanks the former player and coach Filipe Luís for everything that was achieved and shared during this journey. The club wishes him success and good luck in the continuation of his professional career.”

The dismissal follows a turbulent start to the season for Flamengo. Despite the recent thrashing of Madureira, the team has struggled to replicate the success of its 2025 campaign, where it secured the Brazilian Serie A title, the Copa Libertadores, the Campeonato Carioca, and the Brazil Supercopa. Flamengo lost the Brazilian Super Cup to Corinthians and were eliminated from the South American Recopa by Lanús of Argentina. As of Tuesday, the team sits 11th in Brazil’s Serie A, having earned only four points from its first three matches.

Filipe Luís’s tenure as coach began in 2024, following a distinguished playing career with the club that started in 2019. During his time as a player, he helped Flamengo win 10 trophies, including two Brazilian league titles and two Copa Libertadores. As coach, he amassed 64 wins in 101 games, with 15 defeats. His overall win percentage stood at 69.9%.

The timing of the sacking, coming after such a resounding victory, has raised eyebrows. Reports indicate that tensions had been building between Luís and the club’s board, particularly regarding team selection and the management of the squad. According to sources, a dispute over the use of the first-team squad in the Campeonato Carioca contributed to the strained relationship. President Bap reportedly overruled Luís’s initial plan to field the under-20 team in the early stages of the competition, insisting on the immediate return of the senior players.

Further complicating matters was a protracted contract negotiation that extended into the final days of 2025. The club reportedly considered other candidates, including Leonardo Jardim, before ultimately agreeing to an extension with Luís. This period of uncertainty reportedly created internal friction and undermined the coach’s authority.

Flamengo has reportedly initiated talks with Portuguese manager Leonardo Jardim as a potential replacement. Jardim was previously in charge of Cruzeiro but left the club in December. No official announcement regarding Jardim’s appointment has been made.
