Five Toronto Child-Care Centres Closed Amid Labour Dispute
Five Toronto child-care centres closed following a work stoppage involving employees at Ideal Child Service Group, CTV News reported.
Baycrest Child Care Centre And Four Other Locations Affected By Lockout
CUPE Local 2484 stated in a news release that child-care workers at Ideal Child Service Group were locked out by their employer and moved to picket lines. The union reported that the lockout went into effect 15 minutes before a scheduled strike deadline. The closures impact five specific facilities across Toronto:
- Baycrest Child Care Centre at 50 Ameer Ave.
- BonAventure Child Care Centre at 295 Dufferin St.
- Children Are People Child Care Centre at 272 Codsell Ave.
- Pineway Childcare Learning Centre at 110 Pineway Blvd.
- Tumpane Child Care Centre at 48 Tumpane St.
CTV News Toronto reached out to Ideal Child Service Group for comment but did not receive an immediate response.
Bargaining Stalls Over Wages And Staffing Guidelines
Negotiations between the employer and the union broke down after Ideal Child Service Group refused to respond to contract proposals presented in September, according to CUPE Local 2484. The union stated it is pressing for fair wages, enhanced protections for members dealing with illness or injury, and reliable staffing guidelines designed to maintain consistency for children in care.
CUPE Local 2484 president Jess Tomas addressed the labour dispute in the union’s public release. Our members are ready to get back to work, and we are ready to negotiate,
Tomas said. If the employer wants to reach a deal, they need to come back to the table prepared to actually negotiate more than just the bare minimum and respect the invaluable work our members do day in and day out.

Ideal Child Service Group Responds To Union Withdrawal
Ideal Child Service Group posted a formal notice on its website confirming that all five locations suspended operations effective 12:01 a.m. on Monday. The organization attributed the closure directly to what it termed a CUPE 2484 withdrawal of bargaining unit services.
The employer advised families to monitor its online portal for ongoing updates as the situation evolves.
Parents who rely on the affected facilities face immediate disruptions to their daily routines as they search for alternative child-care arrangements.
