Five Key Facts About People Experiencing Homelessness
Homelessness and Health: Stark Disparities Revealed in New Data
Washington, D.C. – A new analysis of 2024 data reveals a deeply concerning link between homelessness and significant health challenges, with individuals experiencing homelessness facing dramatically higher rates of serious mental illness (SMI), substance use disorder (SUD), and HIV/AIDS compared to the general population. The findings underscore the urgent need for integrated healthcare and housing solutions to address the complex needs of this vulnerable population.
The data, compiled from sources including the Department of Housing and Urban Advancement (HUD) and the National Survey of Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), paints a stark picture of health disparities.over one in five (22%, or 140,000) adults experiencing homelessness met HUD’s definition of SMI on a single night in January, a rate considerably higher than the 5-6% prevalence among all adults. Similarly, 18% (113,000) were identified with a chronic SUD, compared to approximately 3% of the general population with severe SUD. These conditions frequently overlap, with roughly one-quarter of individuals with SMI also experiencing SUD, though data on co-occurrence within the homeless population remains limited.
Beyond mental health and substance use, the data reveals a disproportionately high rate of HIV/AIDS among those experiencing homelessness. Approximately 2% (11,000) of adults experiencing homelessness had HIV/AIDS, exceeding the less than 1% prevalence in the general population. Notably, 15% of people living with HIV reported housing instability in the past year, highlighting the cyclical relationship between housing and health.
The data also indicates that these health challenges are even more pronounced among individuals experiencing unsheltered homelessness, with rates of chronic SUD increasing in recent years. These findings emphasize the critical need for targeted interventions and increased resources to support the health and well-being of individuals experiencing homelessness.
