Fisherman Finds Millions in Cocaine Washed Ashore in Cook Islands
A routine reef fishing trip on July 28, 2026, turned into a harrowing ordeal for an anonymous fisherman in Mitiaro, Cook Islands, who discovered a 26.49-kilogram package containing 19 bricks of suspected cocaine, initially fearing the package was a bomb or mutilated human remains, according to reports from RNZ Pacific and Cook Islands News.
From Routine Fishing to Terror on the Reef
The remote island of Mitiaro, located roughly a 50-minute flight from Rarotonga, rarely sees high-stakes international narcotics trafficking up close. For the local fisherman, whose identity is protected by RNZ Pacific, the morning began like any other. Spotting what he initially thought was a shark-killed turtle washed up on the reef, he approached to investigate. The reality proved far more alarming.
“I had two thoughts then: first, I thought this could be a human body chopped up… [and] second, I was suddenly worried that I was wrong and this thing was a bomb and if it exploded right now I would die and no one would ever find me,” the fisherman told RNZ Pacific.
Using his fishing rod, he cautiously nudged the object. A smaller packet fell loose, confirming his suspicions that the bundle was illicit cargo rather than a gruesome hazard. Unwilling to risk triggering a suspected explosive device, he left the initial package on the reef and returned to shore to clean his catch.
Securing the Evidence and Police Intervention
Concerned that the incoming high tide would sweep the evidence away, the fisherman alerted a local police officer. Together with a couple of young men from the community, they retrieved the primary package along with two loose packets that had drifted further across the reef during rough seas.
According to Cook Islands News, the group brought the haul to a local officer’s residence. Upon cutting open the main sack, they counted 17 packets inside, which, combined with the two recovered separately, brought the total to 19 bricks. The contraband was subsequently airlifted to Rarotonga for formal analysis.
Cook Islands Police confirmed in an official press statement that preliminary testing on the 19 bricks—totaling approximately 26.49 kilograms including packaging—indicated the presence of cocaine. Authorities have launched an investigation into the origin of the shipment, examining whether regional vessels or transnational smuggling rings dropped the cargo for retrieval at sea. In response to the discovery, Cook Islands Customs has intensified vessel monitoring and coastal searches.
Regional Vulnerabilities and Community Protection
The fisherman warned that such incidents threaten the safety and isolation of small island paradises, noting his fear that children or other community members might stumble upon dangerous packages in the future.
“We don’t know what their plan was,” the fisherman told RNZ Pacific, suggesting the drugs may have been staged for a passing ship or yacht, or intentionally routed to wash ashore on Mitiaro. “Maybe they planned it all along to throw it in the sea to wash up on Mitiaro… We want to be protected. We don’t want any more of this stuff landing in our paradise.”
Local law enforcement has formally thanked the fisherman and the Mitiaro community for their rapid cooperation. Police continue to urge residents never to touch suspicious packages washed ashore and to report any finds immediately to local authorities.
