First Look: Inside Explora III, the Newest Luxury Hotel-at-Sea
Explora Journeys, the luxury maritime arm of the MSC Group, has officially introduced its third vessel, Explora III.
Market Positioning and the Luxury Cruise Surge
The luxury cruise industry has experienced significant expansion over the last decade. According to sector data, the number of luxury cruise passengers increased from 400,000 in 2015 to more than 1.2 million by the end of 2025. This growth trajectory has prompted major operators to accelerate fleet development, with Explora Journeys committing to the construction of three additional vessels over the next 24 months.
While traditional cruise lines focus on high-volume, mass-market models, firms like Explora are capturing yield by targeting high-net-worth individuals.
Technical Specifications and Operational Shifts
Explora III distinguishes itself from its predecessors through the integration of sustainable liquified natural gas (LNG) propulsion. To accommodate the necessary fuel infrastructure, the vessel measures 19.2 meters longer than its sister ships, allowing for an increased suite count and expanded public amenities. The design includes a specialized fitness center, a padel court, and seven distinct dining venues, including the specialty restaurant Anthology, which carries a premium surcharge of £141 per passenger.
The ship maintains a staff-to-passenger ratio of approximately 1.32:1, with 700 crew members serving a maximum capacity of 922 guests.
Competitive Landscape and Brand Differentiation
The competitive environment for luxury maritime travel is tightening as new entrants arrive. While Silversea and Crystal have historically set the benchmark for onboard service, the entry of brands like The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and the anticipated 2026 launch of Aman at Sea are forcing incumbents to innovate. Explora Journeys is leveraging its parent company’s, MSC Group, existing partnerships—such as its sponsorship of Formula 1—to secure exclusive access to high-profile ports like Monaco during grand prix weekends.
This brand positioning is a deliberate move away from the traditional cruise image. By marketing the ship as a mobile, five-star luxury hotel, Explora seeks to capture revenue from travelers who prioritize convenience and exclusivity.
