Fire Horse Rescues & Minister’s Social Media Pause
The newly appointed Dutch Minister of Social Affairs and Employment, Hans Vijlbrief, has described a recent Instagram post featuring himself and Education Minister Rianne Letschert as “not so tasteful” following criticism over sexually suggestive lyrics playing in the background. The post, which depicted the two ministers together, was accompanied by a snippet of the song “Pause” by rapper Milolaathetlukken, containing the line “bitches willen met me naar bed” (bitches seek to sleep with me).
The controversy erupted on Thursday, February 26th, 2026, quickly gaining traction on social media and prompting a swift response from both ministers. According to RTL Nieuws, Vijlbrief initially stated he was unaware of the song’s lyrics, attributing the post’s content to his social media team. “That was my social media team, I’m a boomer,” he reportedly said.
Despite claiming ignorance of the song’s content, Vijlbrief acknowledged ultimate responsibility for the post. “I will tell my social media team not to do this again,” he stated, as reported by Metronieuws. Minister Letschert expressed shock at the inclusion of the lyrics, telling RTL Nieuws she would be discussing the matter with Vijlbrief.
The incident has drawn reactions from other members of the Dutch cabinet. Finance Minister Eelco Heinen (VVD) offered a playful comment, stating, “Sometimes the wish is the father of the thought.” Thierry Aartsen, Minister of Work and Participation (VVD), suggested the post was a deliberate attempt by the D66 party to distance itself from a “woke image,” according to RTL Nieuws.
Hans Vijlbrief assumed the role of Minister of Social Affairs and Employment on February 23rd, 2026, in the current cabinet led by Prime Minister Jetten. Prior to this appointment, he served as a member of the Dutch Parliament (Tweede Kamer) from December 6th, 2023, and previously held the positions of State Secretary for Mining (2022-2024) and State Secretary of Finance (2020-2022). He has been a member of the D66 party since 2008. The Instagram post in question has since been removed.
As of Friday, February 27th, 2026, Minister Vijlbrief has not announced any further disciplinary action regarding his social media team, and no official statement has been released regarding a review of social media protocols within the Ministry of Social Affairs, and Employment.
