Fire and Ashes brings optional microphone input to PS5 and Xbox
Independent developer ASDstudio will bring its psychological horror title Fire and Ashes to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on October 23, 2026, anchored by an optional gameplay mechanic that responds directly to player breathing and whispers.
Waking in a 1977 Psychiatric Ward
The narrative opens in 1977 inside a psychiatric facility, where protagonist Henry Grey awakens in a bathtub filled with blood-stained water. ASDstudio clarifies that the blood does not belong to Grey.
The hospital setting acts as a conduit to unpack Grey’s past and the tragedy driving his mental collapse. The plot blurs the line between reality and delusion.
Survival Puzzle-Solving and Internal Threats
Gameplay blends exploration, investigation, puzzle-solving, and resource management. Players must contend with deranged guards, cannibals, former patients, victims of inhumane experiments, and entities classified as cybernetic constructs alongside elements described as entities that should not exist.
Despite the hostile lineup, ASDstudio notes that Grey’s most severe threat remains internal.
Microphone Input for Survival Remains Optional
The core survival system relies on microphone input. The software recognizes breathing, whispers, and panic.

Players can hold their breath to hide, scream to draw enemies away or buy time, and use vocal cues to provoke opponents and create openings.
Because microphone sensitivity and headset usage vary by player on consoles, the voice system is entirely optional. ASDstudio confirmed that users can complete the game without using a microphone.
