Finn Wolfhard to Co-Write and Produce Biopic Based on ‘Trouble Boys’ – The Definitive Replacements Biography
Actor Finn Wolfhard is set to co-write and produce a film adaptation of Bob Mehr’s critically acclaimed 2016 biography, Trouble Boys: The True Story of The Replacements, according to Variety.Wolfhard will collaborate on the script with his father, Eric Wolfhard, and Rich Peete will produce. Peete previously produced Wolfhard’s The Legend Of Ochi and 2023’s Hell Of A summer, which Wolfhard co-directed, co-wrote, and co-produced.
wolfhard confirmed his involvement on Instagram, referencing a personal connection to the band: “One of my parents’ first dates was to a Replacements concert.Then I was born! As [Paul] Westerberg once said, ‘Let’s let em down.'”
The project was initially teased during Wolfhard’s Variety cover story earlier this summer, where he mentioned writing music and a movie with his father, stating he couldn’t discuss the band due to rights issues. He also noted a personal resonance with the band, saying, “It’s about a band that I think weirdly I have a lot in common with, a lot of the members.”
Trouble Boys is a extensive account of The Replacements, drawing on over a decade of research and interviews. Described as “a deeply intimate portrait,” the book details the band’s influential yet self-destructive trajectory within the indie rock scene. the Guardian‘s review highlighted its focus on the band’s career, antics, and music rather than critical analysis.
Wolfhard, 22, has a musical background, having fronted the bands Calpurnia and The Aubreys, and released his debut solo album, Happy birthday, in June 2025. No release date for the biopic has been announced.
