Finn Balor on Pre-Wrestling Jobs, Major Injuries, and The Demon Secrets

July 10, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

WWE’s Finn Balor detailed his pre-wrestling employment in Ireland and the physical tolls of "The Demon" persona during an appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet.

The intersection of high-impact athletics and extreme cosmetic requirements creates a unique set of occupational hazards.

The Railway Route to Professional Training

Before entering the ring, Balor’s professional background was rooted in manual labor and transit. According to Balor, his first job at age 16 involved working for a cleaning contracting company where he repaired floor buffers. He noted that he frequently electrocuted himself with 220-volt currents while troubleshooting electrical cables.

Balor later transitioned to a role at Tesco and eventually joined his family’s business with the Irish railway. This position provided a strategic financial advantage for his athletic development. Balor stated that he utilized free train tickets and ferry passes to travel from Ireland to England, allowing him to fund his professional wrestling training without the burden of travel costs.

In-Ring Crisis Management: Rollins and Edge

During a Universal Championship match against Seth Rollins, Balor suffered a shoulder dislocation. He reported that the joint popped out three separate times during the bout, specifically when hitting the ropes or being whipped into the turnbuckle.

The match required real-time "calling on the fly," as Balor and Rollins edited spots to accommodate the injury.

At WrestleMania 39, Balor faced a different crisis during his match with Edge. A ladder shot resulted in a deep laceration that required immediate staples. Balor described a chaotic scene where the ringside doctor struggled to enter the cage because the door was locked and her medical bag was left outside. To mask the medical intervention from the live audience, Edge utilized his veteran experience to distract cameras by searching under the ring for weapons while the doctor stapled Balor’s wound. Balor noted that he stayed in “The Demon” character during the procedure, shouting “Staple it!” to the startled physician.

The Chemical Risks of The Demon Persona

The “Demon” character involves an intensive makeup process that Balor says can take up to six hours to apply. Because the paint is alcohol-based, it cannot be removed with water; it requires a specific alcohol solution to break down the pigments. Balor recounted a specific instance in NXT where the removal solution was missing before a flight to his sister’s wedding in Ireland, resulting in him attending the ceremony with remnants of the character still on his body beneath his suit.

JD McDonagh On Finn Balor

The most severe complication occurred during a match against Andrade in Saudi Arabia. Due to local laws prohibiting alcohol, the makeup team used a non-alcohol-based paint stabilized with hairspray. Balor explained that the combination of 100-degree outdoor heat and heavy perspiration caused the hairspray to run into his eyes.

The result was a temporary loss of vision. Balor stated he was “essentially blind” and had to be linked by other wrestlers to exit the building and board the charter flight. The condition persisted through a refueling stop in Germany, where a doctor had to procure specialized medicine to heal his eyes. Balor reported that his vision only began to unblur 15 hours later upon landing in San Francisco.

Operational Impact and Athlete Longevity

From a sports business perspective, these incidents underscore the volatility of “special attraction” characters. The physical load management of a performer is not just about joint health but also about the chemical and environmental stressors placed on the body.

As Balor continues to navigate the WWE landscape, his trajectory remains tied to his ability to balance the high-concept spectacle of The Demon with the physical sustainability of his body.
