Filip Joos Proposes Radical Corner Kick rule Change After Controversial Antwerp Goal

Antwerp, Belgium – A disallowed goal in Antwerp’s 1-2 loss to FCV Dender has ignited debate over a corner kick rule, with analyst Filip Joos proposing a meaningful alteration to the laws of the game. The goal, scored by vandeplas, was ruled out after officials determined the ball had crossed the goal line before being headed in.

Joos, speaking on the 90 Minutes podcast, argued the current rule is overly strict and largely unnoticed by fans. “Are you sure he’s crossed the line? Let that pass,” Joos stated. “If you can kick it all the way to Beerschot and back, so to speak, and someone heads it in: goal.” He suggests a new rule where a corner kick remains in play as long as the ball bounces within the field of play, regardless of whether it momentarily crosses the goal line.”Nobody in the stadium realizes that, accept the people sitting on the goal line. If the ball bounces, it has to be inside. If it bounces outside, it’s outside.”

Sporting hasselt player Tuur Dierckx raised a potential loophole in Joos’s proposal, questioning what would happen if the ball went over the boards and was returned to the field before bouncing. Joos dismissed this concern, stating such a ball would be considered “dead.”

However, not everyone agrees with the proposed change. Former striker Wesley Sonck believes the onus should be on players to deliver accurate corner kicks. “For me, the problem lies with the player who kicks the ball over the line. It’s that simple,” Sonck said. The debate highlights a growing discussion about modernizing football rules and balancing precision with the spectacle of the game.
