Fiji Airways to Suspend Direct Canberra-Nadi Flights in 2027
Fiji Airways will suspend its direct flight service between Canberra and Nadi on February 5, 2027, citing challenging market conditions. According to The Canberra Times, the airline informed affected passengers that the route would be cut early next year, ending a direct connection that launched three years ago.
Market Pressures Force Route Suspension
The suspension stems from economic hurdles impacting the route’s long-term viability. According to Canberra Airport Head of Aviation Michael Thomson, global uncertainty, rising aviation fuel prices, and softer demand for travel to the United States have created a difficult operating environment. “The impacts of global uncertainty, continued escalation of fuel prices and softer demand for travel to the United States have currently made the service challenging to sustain,” Thomson told The Canberra Times.
Fiji Airways communicated the decision directly to ticket holders booked past the February cutoff. “Due to market conditions, we have taken the difficult decision to suspend our Canberra to Nadi services effective 5th February 2027,” the carrier told a passenger in correspondence reviewed by regional outlets.
When the route launched three years ago, it began with substantial backing and operated three times per week. The airline has not provided a specific date for a potential resumption, labeling the action a temporary suspension.
Impact on Canberra Travelers and Alternative Routes
The withdrawal removes Canberra’s only direct air link to Fiji. Travelers seeking to fly between the Australian capital and Nadi will need to utilize connecting flights once the suspension takes effect.
Fiji Airways noted that passengers can continue traveling to Fiji by utilizing its daily Sydney-Nadi services, a pathway already frequently chosen by travelers departing from Canberra. Canberra Airport officials expressed disappointment over the cancellation while indicating that ongoing discussions regarding international connectivity remain active. “We thank Fiji Airways for its commitment to Canberra and look forward to welcoming them back when the economic conditions improve,” Thomson said.
