FIFA and 2K Games Almost Partnered for Football Rival Game, But It Fell Apart

June 15, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

FIFA and 2K Games entered into preliminary discussions to develop a new football simulation title, but the partnership failed to materialize before a formal agreement was reached. The collapse of these negotiations left FIFA without a direct replacement for its long-standing licensing partnership with Electronic Arts, which concluded in 2022.

Negotiations and the End of the EA Partnership

Negotiations and the End of the EA Partnership

The relationship between FIFA and Electronic Arts, which spanned nearly three decades, ended following a breakdown in contract renewal talks. According to industry reports, FIFA sought a significant increase in licensing fees—reportedly doubling the cost to more than $1 billion per four-year cycle—which Electronic Arts declined. This split resulted in the rebranding of the EA Sports franchise to *EA Sports FC*.

Following the dissolution of the EA partnership, FIFA officials pursued alternative developers to maintain the presence of the FIFA-branded video game franchise in the global market. Reports indicate that 2K Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive, held internal discussions regarding the acquisition of the FIFA license. Despite these talks, the two parties did not move forward with a production deal.

Institutional Stakes and Industry Impact

Gianni Infantino Announces 'True Partnership Between Board of Peace And FIFA' | ALERT News

The inability to secure a new major partner has placed FIFA in a position where it must navigate the gaming market without a flagship simulation product. While EA Sports remains the dominant force in the football simulation genre, FIFA has publicly maintained that it intends to develop its own independent projects. FIFA President Gianni Infantino has previously stated that the organization’s future gaming ventures will be “the best e-game for any girl or boy,” though specific development timelines or partners for these future projects remain unconfirmed.

The failure to reach an agreement with 2K Games highlights the complexity of the sports simulation market. Unlike other genres, football simulation requires significant investment in licensing individual clubs, leagues, and player associations, many of which remain under contract with *EA Sports FC*.

Current Market Status

As of the current fiscal period, 2K Games has not announced any plans to enter the football simulation space. The studio currently focuses on its existing sports portfolio, including the *NBA 2K* and *WWE 2K* franchises. Take-Two Interactive has not issued a formal statement regarding the specific reasons for the collapse of the FIFA negotiations.

FIFA continues to explore various licensing opportunities, but the organization has yet to disclose a confirmed developer or a release window for a new, branded football game.
