‘Gibi‘ Series Ended to Avoid Repetition, Preserve Creative Freedom, Star Says
ISTANBUL – Feyyaz Yiğit, star of the popular Turkish series Gibi, revealed the show concluded to prevent creative stagnation and maintain respect for both the audience and the production. Yiğit explained the decision, made despite the series’ financial success, stemmed from a desire to avoid a predictable formula and diminishing enthusiasm.
“When we first started doing it, something new would turn into something repetitive,” Yiğit said. “I never said, ‘Oh, is that series over?’ I didn’t want to make a series called ‘Let’s miss it.’ We wanted it to be more, but I wanted it to be a timely farewell.I didn’t want it to be a job that would slowly repeat itself and lose its enthusiasm, both in terms of business and audience.”
Yiğit further elaborated that as the series progressed, maintaining narrative flexibility became increasingly challenging. “In a series that has reached its 6th season, the space is getting narrower. In the first season, the character of Yılmaz could have been a numismatist. But if we did this in the 6th season, the audience would not accept it. You lose freedom. You turn into a point that repeats itself.” He emphasized the difficultly of ending a profitable venture, stating, “It was a difficult decision to make, especially when we were making a lot of money.”
Gibi premiered on January 1, 2021, and concluded on June 6, 2025, running for six seasons and 68 episodes. The show starred Yiğit as Yılmaz, alongside Kıvanç Kılınç as İlkkan, and Ahmet Kürşat Öçalan as Ersoy, and centered on the daily lives and reactions of the three men to unusual events.
