government Strengthens Village Cooperative Involvement in Subsidized Fertilizer Distribution
Jakarta, Indonesia – The indonesian government is actively expanding the role of Red and White Village cooperatives and farmer group associations in the distribution of subsidized fertilizers, aiming to improve access for farmers and bolster national food security.
Deputy Minister of Cooperatives,Ferry Juliantono, stated that these cooperatives will be key to enhancing the existing fertilizer distribution system and supporting agricultural productivity. he emphasized that farmers should be able to readily access a full range of agricultural inputs – including subsidized, non-subsidized, and organic fertilizers, and also pesticides - through these local cooperatives.
The Ministry of Cooperatives is focused on strengthening the Red and White Village Cooperatives as strategic government partners within the subsidized fertilizer supply chain, increasing control and efficiency in distribution. This initiative is part of a broader effort to empower rural economic independence and achieve national food self-sufficiency.Supporting this effort, the Agricultural Extension and Human Resources Growth Agency (BPPSDMP) of the Ministry of Agriculture is working to increase the participation of farmer group associations in the distribution process. This includes identifying potential new members for these associations and encouraging the formation of larger associations to increase their bargaining power and facilitate networking opportunities.
While acknowledging challenges such as limited capital, insufficient warehouse facilities, and a need for more human resources within farmer associations,BPPSDMP Head Tedy Dirhamsyah highlighted the crucial role of advisors in helping these groups operate effectively and access necessary financial support.
Currently,BPPSDMP data indicates that 290 farmer group associations,29 farmer groups, and 406 cooperatives are actively involved in distributing subsidized fertilizers across Indonesia. This increased reliance on village cooperatives and farmer associations reflects the government’s commitment to a streamlined and accessible fertilizer distribution system, vital for supporting the nation’s agricultural sector.
