Meaningful Notice: Updated Fertilizer Request Restrictions in Schleswig-Holstein

Farmers in schleswig-Holstein (SH) are reminded of upcoming and recently enacted restrictions on fertilizer application, as detailed by the SH Chamber of Agriculture.
Autumn Fertilization with Nitrogen-Containing Fertilizers
according to the Fertilizer Ordinance,the application of nitrogen-containing fertilizers this autumn is limited to specific crops. Permitted crops include winter rapeseed, field fodder, catch crops, and winter barley following a previous cereal crop. The maximum allowable application rate is 60 kg total N/ha or 30 kg NH4-N/ha, with potential for deviation within this nitrogen range.
This exemption for arable land is time-sensitive and ends on October 1st annually.
Blocking Periods for Grassland and Forage Crops
The SH Chamber of Agriculture clarifies differing blocking periods based on whether land falls within a designated “N backdrop” (Nitrogen sensitive area).
- Within the N backdrop: The blocking period for fertilization with nitrogen-containing fertilizers on grassland, permanent grassland, and perennial forage crops began on October 1st.
- Outside the N backdrop: The closure period for thes same crops begins on November 1st.
Manure and Compost Application Restrictions
in addition to fertilizer restrictions, the blocking period within the N backdrop for the spreading of solid manure from livestock and compost also begins on November 1st.
