FBI Data: US Violent Crime and Murder Rates Hit Historic Lows

August 14, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The U.S. murder rate hit a 20-year low in 2025 alongside the largest one-year drop in violent crime on record, according to data released on Friday, August 14, 2026, by the FBI’s annual crime report. The nationwide decline reflects stabilization following pandemic-era surges, though criminal justice experts emphasize that underlying causes remain complex and multifaceted across different urban centers.

Understanding the 2025 FBI Crime Data and Historic Drops

Statistics released by the FBI on Friday show sharp declines across multiple categories of national estimated crime rates for the previous year. According to CBS News, the comprehensive report compiles information from approximately 87% of the nation’s police departments, documenting an 18.1% decrease in the murder rate compared to the prior year. This marks the continuation of a downward trajectory that data analysts have tracked following post-COVID spikes.

Aggravated assaults fell by 7.2%, rapes declined by 7.6%, and robberies dropped by 18.5%. Property crimes also saw widespread reductions, with motor vehicle thefts falling by 22.7% and burglaries decreasing by 15.8%. Additionally, reported hate crime incidents decreased by about 7%, though the initial data release did not break down specific targeted groups.

“This release confirms that crime in the U.S. is falling at or near a historic clip,” said Jeff Asher, co-founder of data analytics firm AH Datalytics, as reported by CBS News. Asher noted that the figures represent the third straight year of record murder drops and pointed toward continued large reductions into 2026.

Political Responses and Federal Public Safety Measures

Speaking at the Nassau County Police Academy on Long Island on Friday afternoon, President Trump addressed the new statistics. “Today I’m thrilled to announce that the FBI has just released the new Uniform Crime Report showing that in 2025, we achieved the single largest reduction in violent crime in American history,” he stated, as covered by CBS News.

FBI Director Kash Patel also spoke at the event, highlighting agency operations. “This FBI has led the charge to arrest eight of the top 10 most wanted fugitives on planet Earth in the last 16 months,” Patel said.

Since taking office in January 2025, the administration has pursued aggressive public safety strategies, including high-profile immigration crackdowns in major metropolitan areas and the deployment of National Guard troops to cities such as Washington, D.C., to assist local forces with vehicle theft and gun violence. While federal officials attribute falling numbers to these hard-line enforcement initiatives, criminal justice analysts urge caution when assigning direct causation.

Expert Analysis on Urban Crime Trends and Driving Factors

Despite clear national reductions, researchers note that crime rates are falling across cities with widely differing public safety strategies, economic landscapes, and political leadership.

“The homicide drop is historic and crystal clear. But right now, what’s driving it is about as clear as a glass of milk,” said Adam Gelb, CEO of the nonpartisan Council on Criminal Justice, in statements reported by CBS News. Gelb added that the consistency across the map should make observers cautious before crediting any single leader, party, or program.

Experts suggest that broader societal shifts—such as technological changes keeping more people at home and decreases in alcohol abuse—may contribute to the trend. Furthermore, data indicates that after pandemic-era spikes, various metrics are normalizing.

One notable exception in the latest federal report involves law enforcement safety. Reports of assaults on police officers, including both simple and aggravated offenses, reached a 10-year high with 90,178 officers assaulted in the line of duty. Analysts have not yet determined whether this specific increase correlates directly with stepped-up federal immigration and violent crime crackdowns.
