Father Reprimanded After Leaving 7-Year-Old Son Alone on Mount Fuji
A 48-year-old man from Nagoya, Japan, was reprimanded by police after leaving his 7-year-old son alone on the Fujinomiya Trail of Mount Fuji on August 20, to continue climbing toward the summit with his older child. According to reports from ABC45 and The News, the young boy was left unattended at approximately 2,500 meters above sea level before being found by a mountain hut worker.
The Climb and the Separation on the Fujinomiya Trail
The incident unfolded as the family ascended Mount Fuji. The 48-year-old father was climbing the mountain’s Fujinomiya Trail alongside his two sons, aged 7 and approximately 12 or 13, according to ABC45. As the group reached the sixth station—roughly 2,500 meters or 8,000 feet above sea level—the younger boy became exhausted. Rather than turning back or slowing their pace, the father instructed the 7-year-old to “wait here” and pushed onward toward the summit with his older son, as detailed by ABC45 and The News.
Standard hiking times indicate that a round trip from the sixth station to the summit requires about 7.5 hours. By leaving the boy behind around 4:30 a.m., according to reports cited by ABC45, the father apparently expected the child to remain there alone for hours.
Discovery by Mountain Hut Workers Amid Deteriorating Weather
Environmental conditions on Mount Fuji added danger to the abandonment. According to reports from ABC45 and The News, rain was falling and fog was developing by the time a mountain hut worker discovered the boy sitting alone on a bench at approximately 7:40 a.m.

The mountain hut worker brought the child indoors and contacted police. While the boy was ultimately found unharmed and safely reunited with his father, the shifting weather patterns underscored the hazards of conditions on Mount Fuji.
“I made a rash decision, and I deeply regret it,” the father reportedly told police, according to accounts published by ABC45 and The News.
Police Response and Regulatory Warnings
Following the contact from the mountain hut worker, police tracked the father’s ascent. Officers contacted the 48-year-old man when he had climbed near the eighth station, ordering him to return for his son. Upon his return, authorities reprimanded the climber.

Police warned that leaving a child behind was unacceptable, even if it meant abandoning the climb. Furthermore, authorities urged all hiking groups to stay together and plan their pace around the person with the least stamina.
At the time of police intervention, authorities had not indicated whether the father would face formal charges or penalties.
