FATF Updates: New Fraud Roadmap and UK Presidency
UK Assumes FATF Presidency Amid Global Fraud Surge
The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) has unveiled a 2026–2028 strategic roadmap focused on combating fraud, with the United Kingdom assuming the organization’s presidency. The initiative, announced by Giles Thomson during his inaugural address as FATF president, prioritizes strengthening global anti-money laundering (AML) frameworks to address what Thomson described as a “fraud epidemic.”
Roadmap Targets Cryptocurrency Fraud and Illicit Networks
The roadmap’s launch follows a UK-led push to reframe financial crime priorities, emphasizing cross-border collaboration and digital transaction monitoring. Thomson stated the plan would “target emerging threats, including cryptocurrency-related fraud and illicit finance networks operating in under-regulated jurisdictions.”
FATF Shifts Focus to Fraud as Distinct Financial Crime
The UK’s leadership of FATF marks a shift in focus toward fraud as a distinct category of financial crime. The new roadmap includes specific measures to enhance real-time data sharing between financial institutions and regulatory bodies, a move supported by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), which highlighted the “critical need for adaptive frameworks to counter evolving fraud tactics.”
Real-Time Data Sharing Gains Momentum in Anti-Fraud Efforts
Details of the roadmap’s implementation remain under discussion. AML Intelligence, a financial crime reporting outlet, noted the plan’s emphasis on “technology-driven solutions,” including AI-based fraud detection systems and expanded use of blockchain analytics.

UK Faces 2027 Evaluation Over Financial Regulatory Compliance
The UK’s appointment as FATF president coincides with an upcoming evaluation of its financial regulatory regime, scheduled for 2027. The assessment will review the UK’s compliance with FATF guidelines, including its handling of cross-border financial flows and anti-fraud measures.
Roadmap to Be Finalized at October 2024 Plenary Meeting
The FATF’s 2026–2028 roadmap will be finalized at the organization’s next plenary meeting in October 2024, with member states required to submit implementation timelines by mid-2025.
