Fatal Motorcycle Crash on US-41 in Sarasota | Lane Reopening Updates

March 24, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

A motorcyclist died Sunday morning after a collision with an SUV on U.S. 41 near Bayshore Drive in Nokomis, Florida. The crash occurred shortly after 10:30 a.m. As both vehicles traveled south on the highway, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers reported that the SUV driver attempted a left turn from the right lane, entering the path of the motorcycle. The resulting impact proved fatal to the motorcyclist. The area of the crash is also known as North Tamiami Trail.

The collision prompted the closure of lanes on U.S. 41 for approximately three hours while authorities investigated the scene and cleared debris, impacting traffic in both directions. Sarasota County Sheriff’s deputies assisted FHP with the investigation, according to reports.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the deceased motorcyclist or the driver of the SUV involved. Details regarding the cause of the accident remain under investigation and officials have not provided a timeline for the release of further information.

A Florida Highway Patrol trooper noted that crashes tend to increase during this time of year, attributing the rise to a greater volume of traffic with more visitors in the area. “We do see an uptick with our crashes, and it’s simply because You’ll see so many more people here visiting, which creates more opportunities for disappointing things to happen,” the trooper said. “That’s why it’s incumbent upon us to remember that driving, in fact, is a responsibility. Must be taken seriously.”

The Florida Highway Patrol concluded its initial on-site work Sunday, reopening all lanes to traffic. The investigation remains ongoing.
