farmers Donate 35,000 Pounds of Ham to Fight Hunger in Minnesota
FARGO, ND – Farmers Union organizations from five states – Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin - delivered a significant donation of pork to help address food insecurity in Minnesota. On September 19th, over 20 pallets of ham, totaling approximately 35,000 pounds, were donated to Second harvest Heartland.
“Farmers take pride in growing food to feed their neighbors and Farmers Union is proud to make this donation on their behalf to Second Harvest Heartland,” said Minnesota Farmers Union President Gary Wertish. “Rising grocery prices are challenging many family’s budgets, but it’s crucial to remember that farmers earn less than 16 cents for every dollar spent at the grocery store.Working together, farmers and consumers can find solutions so that all are fed.”
Second Harvest Heartland officials highlighted the critical need for protein donations.”Protein, like pork, is a sought-after staple for many of our neighbors and is one of our least donated product categories,” explained Lindsey Ochmanek, Sourcing and Demand Planning Director at second Harvest Heartland. “This donation will benefit thousands of Minnesotans who can’t afford the food they need to thrive. Agricultural producers are vital partners in our work to end hunger, and we are grateful for the continued support of farmers Union Enterprises, and this donation of highly needed protein for our community.”
The donation underscores the ongoing collaboration between agricultural producers and food banks to combat hunger across the region.
