Family Film Box Office Rebound: ‘GOAT’ Success Signals a Strong 2024 & 2025

Sony Pictures Animation’s “GOAT” surpassed $100 million at the global box office this weekend, narrowly claiming the No. 1 spot in the domestic market with $17 million, according to industry figures. The film’s success comes after a period of uncertainty for family-focused animated features, following a significant lull in theatrical releases and box office performance in 2022.

That year saw a pronounced gap in family film offerings, stretching from late July to Thanksgiving. Disney’s “Strange World,” released over Thanksgiving, underperformed significantly, grossing just $73.6 million worldwide, according to Wikipedia. The film, directed by Don Hall and starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Dennis Quaid and Gabrielle Union, followed a family of explorers venturing into a subterranean world. Its failure, along with that of Pixar’s “Lightyear,” fueled concerns that families were hesitant to return to theaters post-COVID, preferring streaming options.

The situation in 2022 highlighted the need for a consistent stream of family-friendly films throughout the year to maintain audience engagement. The success of “GOAT” suggests a resurgence in that market, with its opening weekend of $35.1 million being the largest for an original animated film since “Elemental” in summer 2023. “GOAT” benefited from a relatively modest week-over-week drop of 38 percent, even factoring in the President’s Day holiday, indicating sustained interest.

Industry analysis indicates a preference for PG-rated films among family audiences. According to Comscore, PG-rated movies outgrossed PG-13 rated films in both 2024 and 2025. Last year’s successes included “Zootopia 2” and “Lilo & Stitch,” alongside more modest hits like “Dog Man,” which grossed $144.6 million globally after a similar winter release window to “GOAT.”

Several family-oriented films are slated for release in the coming months. Pixar’s “Hoppers” is expected soon, followed by Illumination’s “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” on April 1. Angel Studios’ “Animal Farm” is scheduled for May 1, and Sony’s live-action family comedy “The Breadwinner,” featuring Nate Bargatze, will arrive in late May. Further releases include “Toy Story 5,” “Minions &amp. Monsters,” the live-action “Moana,” “PAW Patrol: The Dino Movie,” and “Air Bud Returns” throughout the summer.
