Fall Foliage Peak in Pennsylvania Still Weeks Away,Experts Say
PHILADELPHIA – Vibrant fall colors are still on the horizon for Pennsylvania, with peak foliage conditions expected weeks from now, typically around Halloween. The progression of color changes varies significantly with elevation, moving from northeast to southwest across the region.
Predicting exact timing remains challenging, relying heavily on historical observations. Data collected over the last 50 years by Polly’s Pancakes in upstate New Hampshire shows the beginning of peak periods has ranged from September 21 to October 10.
While numerous websites offer forecasts, conditions are unique each year. The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation adn Natural Resources (DCNR) will begin releasing weekly updates and forecasts, compiled from reports by forestry officials, starting on either September 25 or October 2. These reports can be found at https://www.dcnr.pa.gov/Conservation/ForestsAndTrees/FallFoliageReports/Pages/default.aspx.
Philadelphia is well-positioned to experience the fall foliage display, being roughly equidistant from the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia and the Berkshires in southwestern New England, and within driving distance of the adirondacks and the Green and White Mountains. Closer to home, the Philadelphia region offers numerous woodlands and trails for enjoying the autumn scenery, as highlighted in a recent article: https://www.inquirer.com/life/outdoors/hiking-fall-autumn-leaves-pennsylvania-newjersey-hikes-20230922.html.
