Falcons: Robinson Jr. & 2026 NFL Draft – Building Atlanta’s Future

March 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Atlanta Falcons have agreed to terms with free agent running back Brian Robinson Jr., adding depth to their backfield as they prepare for the 2026 NFL season. The move, reported Tuesday, fills a void left by the departure of Tyler Allgeier in free agency, according to multiple reports.

Robinson, 27, joins the Falcons after a 2025 season with the San Francisco 49ers, where he served as a backup to Christian McCaffrey. He rushed for 400 yards on 92 carries and scored two touchdowns. Prior to his time with the 49ers, Robinson spent three seasons with the Washington Commanders, where he was the lead back in both 2023 and 2024.

Throughout his four-year NFL career, Robinson has accumulated 2,729 rushing yards and 22 total touchdowns – 17 rushing and five receiving. He has similarly demonstrated versatility as a receiver, with 73 receptions for 612 yards. The Falcons are hoping he can replicate that versatility behind starter Bijan Robinson.

The Falcons selected Bijan Robinson with the eighth overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, and the addition of Brian Robinson Jr. Is intended to provide a reliable complement. The team views the veteran running back as a player who can handle short-yardage situations, contribute on third downs, and potentially assist on special teams.

Robinson was originally a third-round pick by the Commanders in the 2022 NFL Draft, having played college football at Alabama. He continued a strong tradition of Alabama running backs entering the NFL. The Falcons’ acquisition of Robinson Jr. Is expected to create a humorous dynamic for fans, as the team now features two players with the same last name in the backfield.

The signing of Robinson Jr. Comes as the Falcons look to build around their young core of players, including Bijan Robinson, Drake London, and Kyle Pitts. The team is actively working to improve its roster during the 2026 free agency period, and further additions are anticipated.

The 2026 NFL Draft is approaching, and the Falcons will continue to evaluate options to further strengthen their roster. The team’s focus remains on building a competitive team capable of contending in the NFC South.
