Ubud, Bali – A new chocolate shop, Pod Chocolate Factory & Cafe, has opened in Ubud, Bali, offering visitors a bean-to-bar experience and showcasing the island’s thriving cacao industry. The shop is conveniently located a short five-minute walk from the ARMA Museum (Agung Rai Museum of Art), providing tourists with a complementary cultural and culinary experience.
Bali’s fertile volcanic soil, notably in regions like Kintamani, is ideal for agriculture, and cacao is among its most triumphant crops. The island is recognized as a source of some of the world’s finest cacao beans, attracting chocolate connoisseurs and driving agrotourism initiatives.
Tourists can actively participate in Bali’s agricultural landscape through various agrotourism and ecotourism projects. These experiences offer insights into conventional farming methods and the local way of life.Specifically, visitors can tour cacao plantations like the Pod Chocolate Factory’s own farm, located in Selat, Karangasem, and learn about the entire chocolate-making process, from harvesting the pods to fermentation and roasting.
Beyond farm visits, Bali offers numerous cooking classes focused on utilizing locally sourced ingredients. These classes often incorporate trips to Ubud Market (Pasar Ubud) to select fresh produce and spices, or directly to farms to harvest ingredients. Many classes emphasize traditional Balinese cuisine, teaching participants to prepare dishes like lawar and sate lilit using freshly grown ingredients.
The Pod Chocolate Factory & Cafe itself offers workshops where guests can create their own chocolate bars, customizing flavors and learning about the nuances of cacao varieties. The cafe features a menu of chocolate-based desserts, drinks, and savory dishes, all made with locally sourced cacao. The factory sources its cacao from several farms across Bali, including its own plantation, supporting local farmers and sustainable agricultural practices. The shop’s opening reflects a growing trend in Bali towards artisanal food production and immersive tourism experiences.
