F1 Sprint Races to Expand as Format Evolves for 2025 and Beyond
SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL – November 17, 2023 – Formula 1 is poised to substantially expand its sprint race schedule, potentially doubling the number of these high-octane events to as many as 12 per season in the near future. The move comes as F1 officials cite viewership numbers indicating sprint weekends attract larger audiences than conventional Grand Prix events, though questions remain about whether this represents an increase in unique viewers or simply increased engagement from existing fans.
Introduced initially to inject more competitive action into race weekends, sprint races have undergone several format adjustments since their debut. The current format sees a short, intense race – roughly 100 kilometers – determine the grid for the main Grand Prix on sunday. While the initial implementation wasn’t without its challenges, F1 believes it has found a formula that resonates with fans.
Currently, six sprint races are scheduled for the 2024 season. F1 data suggests these weekends generate higher overall viewership. However, the reported figures are cumulative over the three-day event, similar to attendance numbers at races like the British Grand Prix, making a direct comparison to standard Grand prix viewership complex.
Looking ahead to 2026, six sprint races are already confirmed. But the ambition is to increase that number, potentially reaching half of the entire F1 calendar. This expansion is contingent on continued positive audience response and addressing concerns from drivers.
Initially, many drivers voiced opposition to the sprint format, fearing it could devalue the main Grand Prix.Even reigning World Champion Max Verstappen was a vocal critic. However, Verstappen has since softened his stance, signaling a potential shift in driver sentiment.
The evolving format reflects F1’s commitment to experimentation and optimization. The goal remains to provide fans with more thrilling on-track action and enhance the overall racing experience. As the sport continues to refine the sprint race concept, it will be crucial to balance competitive integrity with the desire for increased viewership and fan engagement.
