F1 Australian GP: Colapinto on Alpine’s 2026 Debut & Season Goals

Melbourne, Australia – Alpine driver Franco Colapinto expressed cautious optimism ahead of the Formula 1 season opener, the Australian Grand Prix, emphasizing the challenges and opportunities presented by the team’s new car and the evolving regulations. The Argentinian driver highlighted the extensive preparation undertaken during pre-season testing in Barcelona and Bahrain, focusing on data collection and understanding the nuances of the 2026-spec vehicles.

“I think it’s going to be a particularly fascinating challenge for this new generation of Formula 1 cars,” Colapinto stated to Alpine’s official channel. “We’re going to work hard on Friday to be in the best possible position for qualifying and the race. I’m excited to get in the car in these conditions and see where we stand.”

This season marks the first time Colapinto will begin a Formula 1 campaign from the opening Grand Prix, a factor he believes has been beneficial in his preparation. “It’s been helpful for me personally to understand the new cars because we aim to have a competitive season,” he explained. “we had positive tests in Barcelona and Bahrain and collected a lot of important data.”

Colapinto acknowledged the significant effort invested by the Alpine team at its Enstone facility. “There’s been a lot of hard work going on in Enstone. When a new car is launched, it’s a very special moment. There are so many long days and nights behind that first lap – hours of effort that people outside the team never see,” he said. “When you witness the dedication in the factory as the car goes out on track, you realize how much it means. Experiencing that with Alpine for the first time was very special.”

The 2026 season introduces significant changes to Formula 1 car design, including smaller, narrower chassis, revised aerodynamic systems, and modifications to the power units. Alpine is adapting to these changes as it aims for consistent performance throughout the extended season. “This year will be a long season, but the objective is clear: to perform at our maximum and achieve consistent results,” Colapinto affirmed.

Colapinto emphasized the team’s focus on building upon the foundations laid in the previous year. “Last year was about laying the groundwork for this moment. Now that it’s here, it’s time to deliver the results the team deserves, and I firmly believe we are ready to take that step forward,” he stated.

Despite having prior experience at Albert Park in Formula 2 and Formula 3, Colapinto anticipates a learning curve as he adapts to the demands of a Formula 1 car on the Australian circuit. “I learn more about the car with each session, and that will also be the case when we start free practice in Albert Park. The circuit is very fast,” he noted. “I’m looking forward to getting to the track in Melbourne and starting the new racing season. It’s going to be a new way of racing for all of us, and I can’t wait to see how it unfolds.”

The Formula 1 season will commence this weekend with the Australian Grand Prix, scheduled from March 6-8, followed by the Shanghai Grand Prix from March 13-15.
